Sometimes, when I can’t sleep, I take melatonin. If you are unfamiliar with melatonin, it’s basically the hormone that the brain releases to regulate sleep and wake cycles. As there are nights when I just can’t fall asleep, I pop a couple tablets and it does the trick.

According to webmd, some of the potential side effects include:

  • Changes in blood vessels that may affect blood flow
  • Lowering of the body’s temperature (hypothermia)
  • Stomach problems
  • Headache
  • Morning grogginess
  • Vivid dreams

    When I take it, I “suffer” from the vivid dreams. This rocks because of two reasons: outside influences and what is playing when I sleep.

    As many people probably know or experienced, when you are dreaming, the outside world plays a big part. Say your phone starts ringing while you are dreaming, it may incorporate itself into your dream. That’s happened to me a bunch of times.

    Or, say, you are like me, and you have the radio on as you sleep. And since you subscribe to XM, you listen to CineMagic. The station that plays nothing but movie scores.

    Now, couple that with the melatonin, and you get one hell of a soundtrack to your dreams. I have some pretty badass dreams when I mix that little cocktail.

    There is are potential downsides, though. Like when it’s the week of Halloween, and CineMagic decides to have its Horror Movie Score Marathon.

    Things got a little crazy in my dreams that particular week.
